Founded in 1859, a family business house was conceived in the city of Junagadh under the name of Sheth Karsandas Baliya. It became the sole supplier of food grains to the Nawab of Junagadh. On August 4th, 1911, the firm was rechristened Sheth Narottamdas Karsandas(SNK), and was headed by Prabhudasbhai Sheth, the senior most member of the family at that time.
Come 1925, SNK group had diversified into many different fields. The most prominent being the commencement of Petroleum Trading by becoming Agents for Indo Burmah Pertroleum Company(IBPC).
In 1933, we started importing Kerosene and Crude Oil from Rumania and exporting Foodgrains. Oil was transported to Bombay from Vishakapatnam by country craft and was stored in SNK owned warehouses in Bombay before they were distributed inwards to Western India. SNK built and leased warehouses in Bombay ever since this time.
During this period, while continuing to represent US Petroleum companies in India, SNK group came to be associated with CALTEX. On July 24th, 1937, SNK was appointed as distributors of Petroleum products for CALTEX and became the company's largest distributors in India. SNK owned and operated 14 petrol pumps all over Saurashtra, Gujarat.
Alongside Petroleum trading, SNK also traded in Textiles in Calcutta, had Sugar(Khandsari) factories in Veraval and Shahpur and traded in Tyres and electric goods.
In 1965, due to the nationalisation of the Petroleum industry, Caltex India Ltd. was taken over by Indian Oil Corporation Limited. SNK continued their trading by representing Indian Oil Corporation. Due to the volatile political environment at that time, it was becoming increasingly difficult to conduct dignified and honest business in the Petroleum industry. A bold decision was taken by Ishwardas Narottamdas Sheth, the Karta of the business at that time. He decided to shut down all SNK petrol pumps in the state. No business which challenged the ethics of the family was worth pursuing according to him.
Through the years, as business expanded, multiple branch offices were opened. Veraval in 1926, Porbandar in 1933, Rajkot and Kodinar in 1938, Morbi in 1939, Una and Surendranagar in 1946, Viramgam in 1952, Gondal and Dhrangadh in 1953, Manavadar in 1956, Dhoraji in 1957.
The core reason for a business house to successfully survive many generations is the decision to conduct business purely on ethics and moral values and to preserve tradition rather than work for monetary gain alone. The firm has always implemented this principle in dealings with companies, commercial dealers, customers, government and other organisations.
The SNK Group's leadership always believed in Inclusive Leadership. Employees, dealers and everyone they came in touch with were considered an extension of the SNK family. The firm always stood by their employees through their good and bad times. Medical Assistance, Educational Scholarships and Grants were formulated to encourage and uplift its employees and the city of Junagadh.
